The Azalea Classic encompasses three events: a 5K race, a 1 Mile race and a 1K race. It’s organized by the University Park Elementary School PTA and takes place on the beautiful residential streets of University Park, MD. Often lined with cheering fans and blooming azaleas, all streets are closed to traffic during the races.
University Park Elementary School is a vibrant preK-6 school, serving a diverse and engaged community. Our population is about 620 students, of whom approximately 40% receive free and reduced lunch. All money raised for this event benefits programs at University Park Elementary School. In the past, proceeds from this event have been used for art and music supplies and instruction, classroom equipment and supplies, books, science equipment and field trips.
VAL CREIGHTON MEMORIAL FAMILY FUN RUN (1K)
Mrs. Creighton was a beloved teacher at UPES for 15 years until her death in 2008. The Family Fun Run is named in her honor because Mrs. Creighton developed lifetime friendships with both the staff and community. She was a relentless supporter of the UPES PTA. She attended every event and persuaded others to get involved. Her students appreciated her hugs, smiles, and encouragement. Her enthusiasm was contagious and she was a welcoming presence at the school activities. She also initiated the UPES Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast to celebrate Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday. She is greatly missed.
CHALLENGE RUN - GO THE DISTANCE MILE (1M)
This challenging race of 1 mile rolls up and back the length of Queens Chapel Road right past University Park Elementary School and the inspiring sounds of the Northwestern High School Marching Band! This race begins all the events at 8:30am and ends under a fantastic balloon arch. Challenge yourself on this longer distance run.
TOWN OF UNIVERSITY PARK AZALEA CLASSIC (5K)
The Azalea Classic would not be possible without the generous support of the town government, police and public works departments and the support of our local Mayor and Town Council members. We thank them for their tremendous support of our wonderful elementary school, year after year.
